Copenhagen Cycling Buddies

Alone on the bike, together in the city.

Every morning thousands of people cross the same bridges, wait at the same lights, and fight the same wind, and know nothing about each other. Copenhagen Cycling Buddies is a free community app that makes that visible. There is one club, and the club is the whole city. Share your rides from Apple Health, see who rode today, ring the bell for a good ride, and meet up for group rides. Underneath it runs a trust layer the club carries together: two members vouch for every newcomer, and after a group ride the riders say how it was to ride together.

The trust layer

A club you can trust, because the club builds it.

Most apps meet strangers with a profile and a star rating. Copenhagen Cycling Buddies meets them the way a real club does: someone who knows you brings you in, and the people you actually rode with remember how it went. The trust in the club is not handed out by an algorithm. Every member adds to it, one ride at a time.

  1. The door

To join, you enter the codes of two members. Each of them gets one question: “Do you know Ida?” Only with two yeses does the application reach a person, who approves it by hand. A no goes only to the admin, never back to you as a verdict.

  2. Who was there

On a group ride, riders tap “I'm here” around the start. No location, just the tap. Whoever posted the ride can confirm the list for two days, then it is fixed. Only people who were really there can say anything about each other.

  3. The card after the ride

Three hours after the start, everyone on the list says how it was to ride with the others: liked it, neutral, or didn't like it, with a few fixed words to pick from, like “steady wheel” or “ran a red light”. No free text. About the poster: was the pace as posted, did the group regroup as planned. You learn who gave you a card, never what it said.

  4. Steps, not verdicts

Nothing is decided by a machine. If something goes wrong, a person can send a reminder of a club rule, pause posting or inviting for a while, or, at the end, close the door. The member sees every step and can answer once.

The trust score

Everybody's memory of riding with you.

Every member starts at 80. After each group ride, the cards of the people who were there move it: a “liked it” lifts it a little, a neutral answer leaves it where it is, and the number is the average of all cards, blended with the start value as if three neutral cards were already there. So no single ride can swing it. And no single person can pull it down: a “didn't like it” only counts once a second person says the same within a year. Cards count together at night, two weeks after the ride.

Vouching carries weight too. While someone you brought in is banned from the club, your score is 30 lower. A report that led to a step costs 10 for 90 days.

80
where everyone starts, and what you need to invite others
98
to post a group ride, or 80 with three rides in the last year and 30 days in the club
1
person who sees your score: you. Never other members, never a leaderboard
0
cards about you that anyone can read one by one, you included

The threshold for posting a ride is a brake on brand-new accounts, not a judgement on anyone. Sharing rides, ringing the bell, and joining a ride never depend on the score.

What it does

Riding days, not race times.

Copenhagen Cycling Buddies sits next to Strava, not against it. It counts riding days and shared moments instead of speed: two kilometres to the kindergarten are a riding day, just like a hundred along the coast.

The city map

A heat map of where the club rode over the last seven days, drawn from rides shared before today. Never a live position, never one person's route.

A feed without an algorithm

The newest rides first, grouped by day, rides shared together on one card. Ring the bell for a good one, comment, say thanks.

København, together

How many buddies rode today, the morning wave, headwind and rain as a shared opponent, and the kilometres the club has travelled together.

Group rides

Members post a time and a place. The planned pace in km/h, how many places, whether it ends after sunset, and how many of the riders you have been out with before.

From Apple Health

Keep recording with Strava, your Apple Watch, or the app itself. Rides come in through Apple Health and can be shared automatically.

Privacy zones

Routes are cut at the zones around your home on your iPhone, before anything is uploaded. The zones themselves never leave your phone.

Private by design

A club needs a clubhouse. Here is what is in it.

Carol and EditMe keep everything on your device. A club cannot: other members need to see your rides. So Copenhagen Cycling Buddies has accounts and a server, and it keeps them as small and as plain as possible.

Only for members

Nothing you share is public on the internet. The club exists for approved members only, and a ride you mark private is seen by you alone, not by other members and not by the admin.

Only what a ride needs

Time, duration, distance rounded up to 100 m, climb, the route already cut at your privacy zones, photos without their location, and a note. Never heart rate, calories, or power: the app does not even ask Apple Health for them.

In the EU, with no trackers

Stored with Supabase on servers in Frankfurt, Germany. No analytics, no ad networks, no crash reporting, nothing sold or passed on.

Gone when you go

Delete your account in the app and your profile, rides, routes, photos, and comments are deleted at once. The full text: Your data.

Trust, all the way through

The first idea for trust in the club was a star rating for group rides. Nobody could fill it in fairly, so it is gone. In its place the club now remembers what actually happened: vouchers are asked whether they really know the newcomer, riders tap “I'm here” at the start, and afterwards everyone who was there says how it was to ride together. Your own trust tab shows where you stand, what is waiting for you, and how the numbers work.

Version 1.0 is being finished now. It will be free on the App Store for iPhone, in English and Danish.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

When can I download it?

Version 1.0 is being finished now and will be on the App Store soon, free, for iPhone with iOS 26 or later, in English and Danish.

How do I join the club?

You sign in with Apple and enter the referral codes of two members who know you. Each of them is asked whether they know you, and a person approves every application by hand. Members are 18 or older.

Can other members see my trust score?

No. Your trust score is yours alone. It is never shown to other members and appears in no list or leaderboard. You see it, the remarks that at least three people made, and every step the admin took with you.

Does it replace Strava?

No. It runs alongside it. Copenhagen Cycling Buddies reads your rides from Apple Health, so you keep recording with Strava, your Apple Watch, or the app itself. It counts riding days and shared moments rather than speed.

Where is my data stored?

What you share with the club is stored with Supabase on servers in Frankfurt, Germany. Routes are cut at your privacy zones on your iPhone before upload, and the zones never leave your phone. There are no analytics, no ad networks, and no crash reporting, and nothing is public on the internet. Every detail is in Your data.

Who is responsible for a group ride?

The app is a notice board, not an organizer. A member posts a time and a place, others say they are coming. Group rides are informal meetups, and everyone rides at their own risk, with their own bike and insurance.

Headwind is easier with buddies.
