When you invert a color negative, the per-channel normalization and the orange-mask correction rarely land perfectly neutral, so a faint color cast is left in the highlights. What causes the residual cast, and what auto-neutralize does about it
A color negative has an orange base. To get a positive, the conversion inverts each channel and stretches it between its own black and white density, which already neutralizes most of the orange. Even after both steps a small cast usually remains, because the scanner white point, the lighting, and the condition of the film all vary from frame to frame.

Because the step only ever raises channels and never lowers them, your brightest highlights are not clipped. To keep a deliberately one-sided scene, like a sunset or an underwater frame, from collapsing to gray, the per-channel gain is held within a fixed range rather than allowed to run free.

Auto-neutralize lives in the color path only. It does nothing to black-and-white negatives, where there is no cast to correct. Every color film preset ships with it enabled, so a normal conversion already includes it. The generic color preset, the one to pick when you do not know the film stock, has it on as well.

- If a frame still carries a tint, confirm you are in the color mode and that the step is active for that recipe.
- Leave it off only when you want to keep a strong intentional color, for example a single-color scene you do not want neutralized.
The trade-off is small. Auto-neutralize adds one extra histogram pass, which is negligible on the editor preview and a few milliseconds at full resolution, which is why it is offered as a switch rather than forced on every render. For fine control after neutralizing, you can still sample the film edge by hand or move to the per-channel and grading tools.

Is auto-neutralize on by default?
Yes, in the color path. Every color film preset, and the generic color preset, ships with it enabled, so a normal color-negative conversion already includes it. The bare default recipe has it off, but you reach that only by building a recipe from scratch.
Does it work on black-and-white negatives?
No. Auto-neutralize runs only in the color mode, because a black-and-white scan has no color cast to correct. In the black-and-white path the step is skipped entirely.
Will it clip my highlights?
No. The step only ever scales the weaker channels up to match the strongest channel, and never pulls any channel down. Your brightest tones keep their value. A separate range limit on the gain also stops a strongly one-sided scene from being forced gray.
Why is there still a slight cast after inversion?
