Recognising and treating hypothermia, offline

Last updated 2 June 2026

Hypothermia is when the body loses heat faster than it makes it, and it progresses in stages: shivering, then confusion and clumsiness, then shivering stops, then collapse. The key first aid is gentle: insulate, warm the core slowly, and avoid rough handling. On the iPhone, Ferdinands Outdoor Companion (FOC) covers it, fully offline and free.

The stages, and what to do

Early on, someone shivers and fumbles; later they grow confused and oddly calm, and the shivering can stop, which is a danger sign, not a good one. The response is to get them dry, insulated from the ground, and slowly warmed at the core, with warm drinks if they are fully alert. Handle gently and avoid rapid rewarming of the limbs, which can drop core temperature further. Seek help early.

Hypothermia in FOC

FOC covers the hypothermia stages and the do's and don'ts as part of its first-aid reference, among more than 40 survival and outdoor articles, all stored on the device. It works in airplane mode, has no ads, no in-app purchases, and no tracking, and reads in German, English, or Danish. It is a reference, not medical advice; get professional help whenever you can.

Frequently asked questions

What are the signs of hypothermia?

Early: shivering, clumsiness, and slurred speech. Later: confusion, apathy, and the shivering stopping, which is a danger sign. It can end in collapse.

What should you not do for hypothermia?

Avoid rough handling and rapid rewarming of the limbs, which can push cold blood to the core and drop temperature further. Warm the core slowly instead.

Does FOC work offline?

Yes. FOC keeps its first-aid and hypothermia reference on the device, so it works in airplane mode with no signal.

Is FOC free?

Yes. FOC is free, with no ads, no in-app purchases, and no tracking.
